Don't walk. Run. An amateur DIY-er who started as a contractor and saw he could make more money building homes himself. His work is shoddy and sloppy. 'It'll get banged up anyway' or 'It's within builder specifications' (whatever that means)...his mottos. He even tried to blame me for things that got damaged...with a grin on his face, of course. 'It's my word against yours'...another thing I heard often.
4 blueprint deviations involving the sizes/placement of windows.
Both toilets clogged and left filthy for me to clean. Even the undersides of the bowls were covered with black soot and grease and left for me to clean. I'm not sure where these were stored, but apparently they were stored unboxed and upside down.
Leaking plumbing under sinks.
Cabinets separating from the walls and each other.
Wrong color kitchen flooring tile grout was used. Argued for months over this until he admitted his mistake. Grout was redone, but it was too soft. Grout was redone again, still too soft in some areas...and he refuses to fix.
All sorts of flooring problems, matter of fact...
Vinyl cut sloppy around sinks and toilets. Subfloor visible in some areas because the vinyl was slashed in a hurry.
Visible carpet seams in 2 rooms. I hear something metal when I vacuum in some areas...tacks? The carpet itself even makes a crackling sound. I pointed that out to him and asked why it was making that sound, and he said nothing.
He tried to force the wrong size vanity into my master bath and then modify it to fit, destroying my wall and knocking the tub's plumbing fixtures loose. I thought the way he'd installed the side splashes looked funny and even mentioned it. Now I realize he should've cut the vanity top on both sides leaving room for slightly taller side splashes to slide in. They are upside down and backwards now, glued to the wall, and sitting on top of the vanity. Gorilla Glue is his answer to everything. That and caulk.
Wrong master bath sink bowl installed initially.
Sagging light fixture with wires visible.
Kitchen exhaust fan doesn't work. Builder refused to tell me the strength of fan needed to bypass a lengthy 90-degree elbow.
Window, window, window problems. Always sales and suppliers. Never a serviceman. In fact, I was forbidden to hire an Anderson-certified serviceman to come out to the house and evaluate as builder was denying any problems and the case had been 'escalated' (to sales and suppliers).
Windowsills bowing.
Exposed ductwork.
Foyer door blowing open when the garage door was up. I hired out myself to replace.
Well pump not low enough.
Grading of property not in line with that of the erosion and sedimentation plan.
I did file a BBB complaint at one point, regretfully withdrawn because the builder was taking his anger out on my home. He's also very spiteful, leaving me sitting in my car for hours waiting for him to arrive at the house. Once he was even a no-show, so I sat in my car and froze all day.
He programmed my thermostat to boil me alive. The HVAC serviceman even checked for me. Told me the programmable thermostats were usually factory-set at 72 degrees.
Powder paint. If you get anything on the wall, expect the paint to come off. His painter did a sloppy job even with a brush.
Surprise faucets! My standard faucets, even my standard light fixture, were all wrong. I was not allowed to see the replacement faucets he had chosen for me until after they'd been installed.
I know I left out lots of problems, even big ones, but do you really want this headache? I had a house built once before. Two problems, a letter written by an attorney, and I never had to see the builder again. Another note, no matter who you choose, never ever agree to an arbitration clause. Take that contract to a lawyer before you sign or you'll be filing complaints with the BBB, Attorney General, and FTC.
Bottom line, run. This builder even filed bankruptcy once and took advantage of someone I met who used to work for him.
