What should I do in Pennsylvania if a contractor takes a deposit and disappears?
Asked on August 28, 2013 by Jiyan

I hired a contractor to perform some work in PA, paid them a deposit of $3,000 and they walked off the job and I haven't heard from them again.

Besides leaving a review on BuildZoom and filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, what are the steps I can take to recover my deposit and make sure this contractor doesn't take advantage of others in the future?

I actually took over a project that the previous contractor bailed on. The client was able to contact their bank and reverse the funds. It took about a month for them to recieve their funds, however the bank was able to take care of the situation. Hopefully you paid with a check or card payment... Read full answer

How can I repair damage to my hardwood floor?
Asked on February 9, 2013 by Anomymous

I recently dropped a Hookah charcoal on my hardwood flooring and it caused some damage.  The finish was damaged however the wood itself seems to be intact.  I spoke with one contractor who said I needed to completely replace the floor however I’m interested in getting some advice on how to proceed.  Here is what the damage looks like:

The most cost efficient solution would be to have a quality wood worker sand the area lightly, re-stain the area that has been sanded. After the stain has completely dried spray the wood sealer over the area to match the finish of the floor. Read full answer

How BuildZoom's Bid Tool Works

  1. We send your project to several of the top contractors in your area.

    • Contractors use BuildZoom to message you.
    • We only send your job to licensed contractors.
    • Contractors must get a 5 star rating to remain on our platform

To get started, provide a short description of your project:

About BuildZoom

BuildZoom has one simple purpose: To help you find the perfect contractor.

How we do this is more complicated. BuildZoom is a database of every licensed contractor in the United States. We work hard to figure out who the great contractors are, and who the bad contractors are.

BuildZoom combines license information on 3.5 million contractors with 70 million building permits, and over a million reviews from homeowners and the Better Business Bureau.

If you are looking for a specific contractor and you can’t find them on BuildZoom, it’s likely that they do not have a license - please contact us and we’ll try to help!

Finding a Contractor through BuildZoom

The best way to use BuildZoom is to let us recommend contractors for your remodeling projects.

Homeowners who hire through BuildZoom's free bidding system report high rates of satisfaction, and homeowners who research contractors online are twice as likely to be happy at the end of their project.

If you hire a contractor through BuildZoom, that contractor is accountable to us. We can enforce standards of behavior, mediate disputes, and guarantee satisfaction.

Read more about why hiring through BuildZoom is so effective.

Why should I trust BuildZoom

We built this site to help people find great contractors, and to help people avoid bad contractors. We take this incredibly seriously, and we have a zero tolerance policy for contractors who don’t adhere to our standards.

1 million people use BuildZoom every month. Our business depends on their trust.

If a contractor does poor work, they will no longer receive leads from BuildZoom, and a negative review will be posted on their profile.
