How important is it to hire a licensed contractor for a remodel vs. a handyman without a license?

It is mandatory. While a remodel may sound like a risk free proposition think about house fires from poor wiring or flooding from poor plumbing. You want see license, insurance and proper permits. The few dollars you may save are not worth risking your families life over. That doesn’t in consider the possible penalties, fines and project shut downs you may have to deal with.

It is very important to hire a licensed contractor for number of factors. For starters a licensed contractor is probably going to have more experience and knowledge in these areas. another reason would be only a licensed professional would be able pull permits to abide by code. also for Insurance, reasons if the handyman were to cause any kind of significant damage to your property due to the work performed there is a good chance the handyman would not have the proper insurance coverage if any at all to cover cost of damages leaving you at loss in the end.

Whenever possible, hire someone licensed. Lots of good reasons are offered here, but the biggest one is protecting your home and family. Licensed contractors work above the table and within the social safety net.

Having said that, it’s not always possible to hire a licensed contractor, especially for smaller jobs.
