Is it a bad idea to put pricing on your website?

It really just depends on your line of work. If most of it is custom and has variables then it is best not to put pricing. It is easy to lose customers if you have prices listed and then you give them another quote that is nothing around that pricing.

if you have a for sure fixed price on a product it is ok to list the price, but if you provide a service it would be a bad idea to provide the price

The price listing is going to vary from coast to coast. It will give people who have no experiance and looking up this site for help and see prices, it will give them a bad impression, they do not know any better. It might work for hourly rates if you are a service provider, please indicate your location and area of coverage. Best to see and meet clients eye to eye and hear there words.

Variables and the nature of work to be undertaken does not allow us to have pricing online. Working with the client in person will give us a better understanding of the project and will have no room for misinterpretation… Hence looking at he job and the details that go into it , and then giving an estimate works better for the kind of work we do.

I’ve noticed that a lot of contractors don’t put pricing on their website, and I agree with your theory - bigger or custom jobs would be very hard to price.

Some of the more common, standard jobs could be priced and advertised, but many seem to avoid it because of competition…the next company can come in a few dollars less and suddenly your ā€œpricingā€ is not a selling point. It really depends on your market and your clientele.

I don’t recommend that, every project has a different challenge and work scenario its different from one job to another.
On site estimate its the best and safe way to prevent to loose money.

I believe that customers need a little more than just seeing a website and prices to determine weather they will work with a particular contractor or not. Most customers want quality they just do not know what it is and that is my job to communicate it to them.

Estimation is not guessing. How can you estimate some renovation without seeing the room, or house?

If you are selling potato that is different story. Online calculation about 1,000 lb of potato can be accurate as well as for 1,500 lb. You can put the price on your website.

very bad idea because in our line of work every project is different and no one could know a price unless they are there or have been to the job site
