Should I be selective when hiring a contractor to do demolition?

Demolition is a very delicate process; whoever is doing it needs to make sure they know what to do.

Jiyan Wei,

It can be risky. If you are just taking something down, then the risk of having a problem is not very high. But if you are looking to remove lets say a wall that is connected to a wall you are not removing, then that person needs to be mindful NOT to damage the remaining wall section that is not to be removed. I hope this example provides guidance.

You need to be careful with a few things.

  1. Demolition is a very dangerous activity and you will want to make sure the contractor has the proper insurances and permits.
  2. Make sure to get licensed electricians and plumbers involved if there are any utilities to disconnect.
  3. Make sure to get a structural engineer involved if there are any load bearing elements involved. You don’t want to demolish something that shouldn’t be.
  4. Can’t hurt to ask for references.

yes, demolition is a special trade that has its own trade license. the contractor should know how to read plans. understand load bearing of walls, framing and foundation complexities. Demo also requires permit.
