Does the Bay Area need a new tourist destination? The folks at Apple think so, as they are building a lavish new visitor center overlooking Apple\u2019s new campus.<\/p>\n

Apple will spend 79.9 million dollars<\/strong> on its new visitor center located at 10700 N. Tantau Avenue in Cupertino, according to building permits filed today (December 17) with the City of Cupertino. The 20,135 square foot<\/strong> visitor center will be complete with glass walls, a 2,386 square foot cafe and a 10,114 square foot store as well as a rooftop observation deck for visitors to admire the spaceship-like campus across the road.<\/p>\n

BNBuilders<\/a> will take on the building at a cost of almost 4,000 dollars per square foot<\/strong>, which is more than double the campus\u2019s 1,500 dollar per square foot cost estimated by Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month Apple also filed a 26 million dollar permit for an underground parking structure at the visitor center, bringing total spending on the center to 106 million dollars. The investment is likely to enhance Apple\u2019s outward appearance and draw crowds to see its new campus. In the initial stages of the project Steve Jobs stated \u201cwe have a shot, at building the best office building in the world. I really do think that architecture students will come here to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
