In 1979, Troy started working for his uncle in the construction business where he learned to build wood basements, foundations, apartments and commercial buildings. He later started working with Wickes Pole Buildings learning how to construct both residential and commercial pole buildings. At the age of 20, Troy became the crew leader at Lott's Construction managing multiple home construction sites while also learning to build in-ground swimming pools. Then in 1990, Troy started Troy's Construction Co. building small projects while eventually moving to full penalized custom homes and site condo’s.

Troy was always looking for ways to innovate when building and learned how to build floor and walls panels and wood basement walls. He found that in Michigan, a house built with panels allowed for a higher quality home that could be built quickly. His team could frame a single or two story 2,200 sq. ft. home with an attached garage in one day which included exterior and interior walls, windows and trusses. Troy was building 10-20 homes/year, apartments, hotels and land developments. He successfully owned and managed his own crew of framers, roofers, siding, etc. but in in 2001, he decided to leave the construction company to pursue other opportunities.

In 2001, Troy was hired by Mission Lumber in external sales. He became extremely successful in sales and found that he had a passion for working with people. He successfully pursued other opportunities in sales but then met the love of his life Kelley and wanted to build her a dream home. So in the fall of 2011, together hey bought a project house on Wall Lake in Delton and another lot next door. Together they built a wood foundation, moved an A-frame house to the new foundation and built a new custom home with an in-ground swimming pool. Troy became excited about building and remodeling and decided to reapply for his builder's license and is now a licensed in the state of Michigan. So with that, his new company Building Dreams Construction is about putting the best team of professional sub-contractors to build your dream project. Troy is the past president of the Home Builders Association of Western Michigan and past President & past Vice President of South Central Builders Association. His passion for the building industry has led to programs focusing on increased diversity in the building trades, affordable housing programs and advocating for workforce development in construction as a positive career pathway.
