Our AC fan on the outside unit would turn off every once and a while. It did the same thing last year, but since we were heading for a week of 90* plus weather, we decided to get it fixed. Eurotech had put in a furnaces for us in a rental property this winter, so we gave them a call. One of their guys showed up within an hour of his stated arrival time. He took the cover off of the outside unit and did some testing while I watched. Unfortunately, I needed to leave so the rest of his inspection was done without my spouse watching. His diagnosis was we needed a “switch” and a fan motor which was $800, but the unit was old and we should get a new unit for $4200. When we asked if he had anything in the $3000 range, he needed to check with his office and would get back to us in a day or two.
When we didn't hear back, we did a little search on YouTube and saw that the “switch” he spoke of was a capacitor ($12 locally) and that the fan motor was $120 locally. It took me about 40 minutes to install the two items. The fan would then run whenever we turned on the unit. The bad part was the air from the vents was warm.
We call company 2 the next morning. Guy comes out, listens story, takes a look at the unit and says that the oil on the base is a pretty clear indication that “some how” all the freon has leaked out of the system. Maybe the loose valve “just happened” to start leaking when the Eurotech person left.
Less than one hour later, valve is replaced, system charged with freon, and the house is nice and cool. Still no call back from Eurotech.
