We put an ad in a local group looking for an exterior painter. He contacted us, came to our home and presented as a nice guy who knew what he was doing, telling us about his experience and also stating he did "many Newport homes." He asked for 1/3 down, which we gave him, remainder due upon completion. He was to begin on April 1st weather permitting.
April 1st comes, we have to call him. His wife is working and he needs to be home with kid due to Covid- will start on weekends. Weekend comes, we also need to call him and we're told wife was exposed, everyone in home quarantined. Over the next few weeks we got many excuses as to why he couldn't come, his wife cheated, his kid had truancy issues he needed to clear (kids weren't in school). Each time we had to call him, and when brought up how unprofessional this was he said "I answered the phone." He then said he'd need additional funds to begin working. We gave you 1200. He told us he "fell on hard times' and had to spend the deposit. He spent our money without a day of work being put in and had audacity to ask for more.
He did 1 and a half days of work the end of April and never returned. He power washed (as part of the package) and sanded one side of the house. He stood by his behaviors referring to clause in contract he had until May 31st to complete. The contract said "weather permitting" not whenever you feel like it or not. You start a job and work until done. Anywhere else you call when you can't be there and you'd be fired if you no called/no showed several times.
It is now June. We have filed against his license. The licensing board tried to mediate return of deposit. He wants 600 for his work. For one, it was basically only power washing and we didn't hire him to power wash our home for 600 dollars. He was hired to paint and needed to wash before starting. He never completed, never returned the deposit. We are now filing civil suit. It also needs to be known the neighbor across the street gave him deposit to start after ours, he didn't show, didn't return their money and they also have filed complaint.
We hired someone else, they showed, they finished and they also had to go over his scraping and sanding part on the one side. It wasn't good enough.
