Paula Nolan has done it all in construction. “I sort of fell into construction when I was 19 years old and working for an HVAC company as an administrative assistant. She had been with them for several years and propelled the company from Index Cards to operating with a computer program.
She was then sent out into the field to do sales, when out doing sales, a contractor pulled out a set of plans and began to go over the layout for HVAC zones and discuss the mechanicals.
“I had at that point realized, I was ignorant to reading blueprints and never wanted to be in that position again”. She quickly researched where to attend a school for Blueprints & Drafting and that is where she fell in Love with the industry.
Paula had worked in a variety of settings, too—from nine-person, mom-and-pop shops to companies employing of over 150 people, operating projects up and down the east coast. From the diverse and inclusive to the not-so-much, she’s nearly seen it all. Because she didn’t take the traditional 4-year college path, being approached by executives and asked to become a project manager is Paula’s greatest accomplishment in her eyes.
“I can understand and appreciate everyone’s role because I’ve been in most of them,” she said.
I then began working for a High-End home builder for over 13 years where, who happened to be one of my accounts I picked up through sales. I was hired as a project manager to run one project for the year, and wound up organizing, and managing the entire company.
According to her, it’s been an invaluable tool and the basis of her advice to women entering industry: “Don’t disregard any information or anything someone is trying to teach you. It all matters, even if it doesn’t seem relevant at the time.” “I have learned more in the field by watching others make mistakes, those experiences are invaluable.”
“When I was coming up through my career and I found myself on-site in the field, not only was I a woman, but I was young. And I felt like the older, more tenured field men and tradesmen would either take me under their wing and want to teach me things, understanding I was serious and taking the time to really explain processes, or they would call me ‘hon’ and ‘babe.’ You had to have thick skin to be a young woman on the project site.”
But it’s different now than it was 20 years ago, she says. “Sometimes, I’m the only female I see all day, but more and more, I’m seeing women in both field and office positions. Through all the years I have worked with other companies there was always a few key components that they lacked, and I pride myself in those things.
