“Having grown up here, I love the traditional New Mexico style and its relationship to the unique landscape. It's a major driving force with me and my architecture. Even though I have done some unusual contemporary work, I really like the old forms and ideas of the New Mexico traditional style to make new timeless solutions.”
Richard studied the New Mexico style of John Gaw Meem - a legendary southwestern Architect, responsible for defining and cataloging historical vernacular NM architecture (now considered the Santa Fe style). Schalk’s work is in the John Gaw Meem Archive of Southwestern Architecture, Special Collections UNM main campus, Zimmerman Library.
Graduating from the University of New Mexico in 1973 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture, Richard has more than 40 years experience in Architecture ranging from custom homes, home remodels & historic renovations to tenant improvements, retail, dental offices and hospitality.
He is a Registered Architect in California and New Mexico, with memberships in the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). He has produced a number of award winning homes and has had homes featured in the American Institute of Architects, Albuquerque Chapter as well as magazines and various fundraising events.
