Project: 240V electrical service to detached garage — hillside property, Laguna Beach
Overview:
My house sits at the top of a hillside property, with the detached garage approximately 110 steps / ~150 feet down the hill. I need a dedicated 240V circuit run from the house to the garage to support Level 2 EV charging (two vehicles).
Current situation:
Existing wiring to the garage consists of two separate 120V circuits, run as romex through conduit down the hillside. One circuit has already failed (suspected due to age/improper wiring method for this application). The garage currently has a shared 120V circuit powering a fan, battery tender, security camera, and EV charger — resulting in slow charging (~2.75 miles of range/hour) due to voltage drop over the long run plus shared load.
