How can you protect yourself?

Be sure to hire a contractor that has worker's compensation, or you could be held responsible for any injuries on the job. Choosing a licensed general contractor is important, as the California State License Board can take action against an unlicensed contractor, but cannot force them to make repairs or pay amends.

Do I need a permit for small projects?

Only very minor projects can be done without a permit, such as painting, most landscaping, and some simple repairs such as replacing the glass in a window. Keep in mind that Los Angeles has an ‘express permit’ system for minor scale projects that do not require the standard and lengthy plan check, but need a permit nonetheless.
