Hiring a contractor in New York

Who to hire in New York?

There is no General Contractor's License in New York City. Instead, you must hire a "Home Improvement Contractor" (HIC) licensed by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Some work like electrical and plumbing will require the services of other specifically licensed tradespersons. We recommend using our bidding system to get multiple quotes before you choose a contractor.

Before you start

Before you submit your application for a construction permit, you must hire an architect or licenced engineer registered with the state of New York to prepare a construction application and associated plans. There is no central Department of Buildings in New York, as each of the five boroughs has its own DOB.
