To make this a useful review and not a long drawn out account of my experience with High Tides II, I will provide a list of pros and cons. It is still pretty long so if you ready nothing else, please read this:
GET A CONTRACT THAT CLEARLY LAYS OUT TERMS OF TERMINATION, RESPONSIBLE PARTIES, ETC. THEY DO NOT HAVE A FORMAL CONTRACT AND IN HINDSIGHT, IT IS VERY CLEAR WHY THEY DO NOT!
Pros:
1. Elizabeth does a nice job with drawings/rendering & providing ideas and feedback on designs.
2. Elizabeth is friendly & reasonable (so is Forrest if everything is going as planned).
3. Reasonably priced. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive.
4. Some work was done well. They framed our back deck and they did a very good job with that. Most of the work on the inside was fine (drywalling, ceilings, etc).
4. Clean workspace - these guys kept their work areas very clean
Cons
1. No contract
2. Quality – some work was well done. Some was poorly done. Examples: (1) the addition they added on to our bedroom was not even close to level with the existing house. (2) The new contractor had to add re-enforcements to the internal barn doors (High Tides was did not have proper support so it had to be re-done). (3) They hooked up our dock wiring to the same circuit as our guest side of the house vs. the existing separate breaker devoted to the dock. (4) The tiling work in our showers was described by other professionals as “rookie work,” and “completely wrong.” The basic work was fine, but they took shortcuts that would have presented significant problems in the future had our 2nd contractor not fixed them.
3. Damaged to existing structure – Support wraps on front of house were damaged in numerous places. They dented the brand-new sliding door frame they installed and left it. They also had the word “UP” written and stained in the top part of the frame. High Tides also dented part of the back porch ceiling frame and never told us.
4. Pot filler – we added a pot filler to the kitchen. They installed it literally less than 4” from the countertop (making it completely unusable).
5. Cigarette buds were left in garage, driveway, and yard
6. Cable access box – Spectrum advised there should be an access box in every house. There was no box in the house…just a hole roughly punched out through a closet
7. Forrest was extremely rude and unprofessional to my wife on two occasions. He told my wife that we could accept the tile work that was done in the shower or find a new contractor (note: this is the tile work that the Tile Shop advised was installed completely wrong and another tile installer referred to as “Rookie work.”
8. Incapable of meeting a deadline. Our house was supposed to be completed by July – August 2018. The walked out on the job in February 2019 it was less than 60% complete.
9. Forrest is incapable to being accountable and taking responsibility. If you use them and there is a problem, insist on working the issue through Elizabeth.
The more time I spend at the house, the more damage, and mistakes I find. We truly believe that High Tides purposely terminated our relationship because it was easier to leave the job than to fix all the things that needed to be replaced. They are “cash honest,” but our experience shows High Tides can be extremely shady. It became very clear that they know exactly how much $ it cost a customer to take legal action. In other words, it would have cost us more in legal fees than to recover the $10K+ we had to eat to finish and fix the mess they left….and they know it! So again, GET A CONTRACT SIGNED!
