A previous owner painted our natural stone fireplace and brick patio. Is it possible to strip off this color?

Yes it can be done fairly easily, but I highly recommend taking proper precautions.
Paint thinner can be applied to soften up the paint, and then removed with a pressure washer.
I highly recommend you take proper steps to prevent the paint flakes from contaminating your garden or lungs and/or washing into the drain. Some of those paints can be hazardous to your health (ie. lead).
A pressure washer can then be used to bring off the flakes. Start with the lightest pressure and work up from there.
