Best way to create a large outdoor pond?

I’m interested in building a fairly sizable pond in my backyard (10 foot wide, 10 foot long, and 3-4 foot deep). I don’t have any experience doing this. Eventually I’d like to be able to have fish and turtles living in it. Approximately how much would this cost to create? Is there anything I should read to learn more about the process?

There are a lot of ways to build a pond! A major factor in your cost will be the materials you use to build.

A lower-cost, faster option would be to dig out a hole and use a tarp-like pond liner. This is common practice, though eventually a liner will tear or leak and need patching or replacement.

Another more costly option would be a concrete pond, which tends to be more expensive and takes longer (need someone who can properly pour and cure the concrete), but is far more durable than a flimsy pond liner.

The other common option is pre-fabricated ponds. These are often plastic or fiberglass and molded into shapes. Installation is simple since you just dig a hole and place it in the ground, and they won’t tear or leak as easily as a normal pond liner. It might be hard to find one this large, and shipping may also be a challenge.

There are many other options, from wood and cinder block ponds to just digging a hole and letting it fill up naturally if your water table is high enough. These seem to be the 3 most common options, though.
