Cover it and the floor completely with clear fireglass, and then cover that with reflective bronze or matching color to your fireplace exterior. Then light it up. The only caveat would be to make sure you can shut off the gas valve without getting burned. So, make sure the gas valve is properly located at least a foot away from the flames.
