Can a licensed home builder install his or her own electrical wiring on a project?

Check with your state licensing board on their electrical code, it differs from state to state depending on what your wiring. here in Massachusetts they are pretty strict with electrical house or appliance wiring, you must be a licensed electrician & pull a permit.

Some townships require a master electrician (and plumber for that matter.) Others may require just an outside electrical inspection company to approve the initial electrical drawings and/or perform the actual rough/final inspection. Like the previous answer states, always check with your township’s requirements when accepting bids for your project. With that being said, if your local government does not require it, PLEASE make sure your contractor is actually capable and up to date on code!! If the contractor fails the rough or final inspection, he or she should make the appropriate fix immediately and reschedule inspection promptly. Unless it’s a major violation, don’t worry all that much if they fail the first time because unfortunately, townships are notorious for approving plans/permit applications, and then requiring something not noted by them on the plans they JUST approved! Sometimes they request things that aren’t even in the code book, it’s just the way they like it! It could also be a different inspector who likes things in a very particular way, or with more experience, OR if they’re in a bad mood that day. A good contractor will do exactly what they request at the first inspection and should pass no problem at the rescheduled inspection.

In my state, it is required that a licensed electrician pull permits and attend inspections to commence and complete the electrical work. Honestly, I would prefer to have my trades separated into specialties and a check-and-balance system that would require that type of separation because not all home builders have the expertise to complete the project on all levels. The home builder would also have the ability to sub out the work to specialized contractors, which most home builders do anyway. But, the home builder could also hold all of the pertinent licenses in-house. Overall, you just want to make sure that whatever home builder company you hire is using a licensed specialist in that trade to complete the work.

Unless the builder holds his own license for electrical work or the builder is also the owner of the house and is building it for himself to live in, you need a licensed electrician and get work inspected at a point before it is covered and again at the job finish. There are very few areas of America where a license for this work is not required, check to see if there is an enforced code where you will be building and go from there.
