I want to build a custom, 10 foot table. The design is simple, but everything I’ve seen in stores costs several thousand dollars.
Can I hire a carpenter for this project? How would the pricing work?
Hello,
Yes you can.
I would not. While carpenters are usually very proficient at hanging doors, kitchen and bath work and building additions, they pale by comparison to building furniture. Even a seasoned cabinet maker would recommend you hire someone who does strictly furniture.
You could call a cabinet maker and probably have the most luck there. If you have a VERY skilled trim carpenter, they could also do this. I wouldn’t hire a framing carpenter.
Yes you can, but not every carpenter is a skilled cabinet maker. You should make some local overviews before you hire someone.
Great question, Joan! Carpenters are trained for rough framing and trim work. This includes framing a house, installing beams, installing headers for doors, roofing, siding, installing base and shoe trim, casing for doors, and possibly coping corners for crown and trim. But, building furniture takes a craftsman. Most carpenters are familiar with pressure treated wood, dimensional lumber and red oak. But, furniture is crafted from a variety of wood species, each requiring specific methods of cutting, sanding and staining to achieve the best appearance possible. Remember, furniture is a showcase or art piece in your home. Plus, furniture is built using wood joiners (most times), not fasteners like screws, and carpenters are not generally trained, or experienced, in this type of fastening system. A good analogy to think of is the comparison of a general physician to a cardiologist. Although both are in the same field, one is trained in a specified area. And, as far as pricing is concerned, the final price depends on the material used and the cost of the labor to make it. You could buy the material for a table for $500 or $5,000, it all depends. But, if you have anymore questions, please contact DDT Home Transformations.
Of course you can. You just need to check quality and reviews about him besides the face to face meeting with him and get a “feel” about him.
I had no problem with mine for over 300 projects so I guess its all about finding the right one.
It all depends on the personal skill levels of the carpenter. Shop around and ask folks in your area. Look more towards woodworking business than general contractors. Most folks that build furniture are specialized in that trade and skill.
Yes you can, I’m a general contractor who also builds cabinets and furniture but I prefer to save my woodworking projects for the winter months.
It really depends on the contractor skill levels as a carpenter. Most professional carpenters specialized in that trade are highly skilled.
Most true carpenters that came up thru the trade or went to a votech have the knowledge an can build you a table . A cabinet maker would be able to make you a piece of furniture and stain it
correctly. Usually someone that has a few years under him or her.,just ask them if they have made
anything like that before. Great question.
