Can I use moisture resistant (blue) Sheetrock to redo a shower wall?

You could technically. But I would recommend a1/2 inch Durock or cement board taper all seems before the time or enclosure is installed

Yes, if it will be covered with water resistant material like Schluter Kerdi. Moisture resistant drywall in not a water resistant material, it will be damaged over time and can cause leaks.

Yes, you can use it. But I would recommend you to please consult your remodeling-contractor.

Water resistant is not waterproof. The water resistant sheetrock is used in a shower environment due to the moisture in the air, but prolonged direct exposure to water will damage it. Use it around the top of the shower, above the spray.

Any shower wall to be tiled should have a cement backer-board base, not sheetrock of any kind.

Hope this helps!

purple, not blue

you can use the blue sheetrock in the shower walls it’s mold resistent, of course it’s only moisture resistent also you would need to cover it with water replellent like cement board, hardi board, and tile. you could also use a cultured marble sheet to cover the drywall.

Of course, as long as you don’t get it wet. You can accomplisht that severl different waterproofing membranes. We use the Kerdi system by Schluter.

You will need to use durock in order to tile over. Also before tiling you should tape all corners and joints and use a waterproof. this will give you more protection against the water and many years of warranty.

moisture " resistant " drywall will work in a bathroom enviroment, but for a shower i would only recomend it for a backing for an insert system along with additional waterproofing barriers along any seams. tile appplications should have proper backing board material to insure lasting results. in the past i have seen tile over drywall, however if and when the grout lines fail so will the entire wall of the shower leading to damage and mold.

Moisture resistant drywall or greenboard is great for bathrooms and other high moisture areas but is no designed for or should be used for shower walls. The right backer and a water proofing system should be used. Right now schluder is putting out great products for water proofing.

No. Code requires that no laminated products are to be used as backing for showers. “Densheild” is the best product to be used instead of sheetrock. Durarock can be used but then the tile guy cannot staple his copper staples into it to hold wire for doing a concrete float.

NO. Absolutely Not. Do not fall for Schluter marketing.

Consider - let’s say one uses drywall and does 100% perfect Surface Waterproofing. Ok - so what hapens if there is a leak BEHIND or FROM ABOVE? This happens in real life. The Drywall will fall apart and fail - the shower will be destroyed.

All because some contractor was too lazy to use a standard backer board and a quality waterproofing liquid or membrane.
