Can you estimate the size of a kitchen based off the size of a house?

If all you knew were the dimensions of a house, could you approximate the size of the kitchen?

How much variability is there from house-to-house in terms of the kitchen size?

The size of the kitchen depends on the age and style of the home more than the total area. Modern home design has made kitchen size a more elusive measurement. In most American homes designed in the last 30 or 40 years, the kitchen is part of a larger, open living area, possibly including a family room and an informal dining area. The food prep area, with appliances, counter space and cleanup areas, may be under 50 square feet.

Prior to that, most American homes had a separate, enclosed kitchen, that might have been somewhere between around 10% of an average home’s size.

Of course, many remodels in those older homes have the object of removing those walls and blurring the line between the kitchen and our other living spaces.

No, some homes have galley style and some have large gourmet kitchens.

Generaly, Yes. The kitchen in most cases is directly related to the size of the house. I dont think its fair to say the tipical kitchen is one tenth of the square footage, but it will be close (in most cases). The sizing of the rooms are more comonly related to the number of bedrooms (or approximat head count) in a given house or structure. An important factor to consider would be is the dinning room part of or seperate from the kitchen.

The short answer is, No. That said there are a few other pieces of information that would allow a contractor a reasonable approximation. If one were to include the home’s style, ie. cape cod, bungalow, colonial, federal, etc. the year it was constructed, and the kitchen type, ie. galley, L shaped, U shaped, square, etc. With the added info, a skilled estimator should be able to approximate kitchen size based on the dimension of the house.

Based on my experience, 99% of home’s kitchens fall between 6x7 and 20x20. I know it’s a large variance, but there are a lot of kitchens out there.

No mam, you cannot.

No. To approximate one must physically do a walkthrough assessment and measurement. Houses tend to differ from region to region and factor in the achitectual design and lastly the age of the house ther is no way to accurately determine the size of a kitchen based on the sturctures dimensions. so NO!

I would say yes, certainly in proportion to the size of the home. Style and level of custom finishes and features, however, are really the driving factors for most importantly… Cost! or Allowance.

No. Approximating the size of a kitchen in a home is impossible without viewing the interior. Kitchens can vay based upon an individual’s preferences including aesthetics and functionality. Large homes can have small kitchens and small homes can have large kitchens. Kitchens vary greatly and can include an island, peninsula, breakfast area, nook, hearth room among amenities.

It is really up to you to determine the size of a kitchen in a custom home. You need to ask yourself what you prefer and how much you would use the kitchen.

Some people have large kitchens because the do a lot of entertaining and they want space for guests to be in the kitchen.

Some people have large ktichens because they love to cook and want to have enough space to feel comfortable in the space to prepare multiple dishes at the same time.

Some people have a small kitchen in a large house because they never cook and they use it just to warm up things in a microwave.

So it is really up to your preferences.
