Can you paint over wall paper glue?

Can you paint over wall paper glue and have it look professional?

No. An easy way to remove it is dish-washing soap and water and rub it gently with a sponge so you do not disturb the top layer of paper on the sheet-rock. Remember, sheet-rock is very dry and should remain dry so do not apply too much water or it will ruin the wall.

It is not recommended to paint over the glue, but I have seen other painters do this and it worked. The finish however did not look very good.

Absolutely NOT ! Unless you’re trying to create a antique looking art project? If that is a style you’re will to consider, then go for it! (Look through Google images under “Paint Checking” to see what the results could look like.)

But if you want a clean looking finished surface, then even if you wash the walls with soap and water or choose to raise them off with some brand of wall paper remover, there will still most likely be a thin film of water based residue left over in one spot after another which will be absorbed into the paint when you apply it. The end result will be unwanted, and varying degrees of paint checking throughout, and you will not be able to correct this problem by putting on additional layers of paint.

The only way to block this problem is to wash off the glue as much as you can and then prime the walls first with a paint sealant… preferably one that is designed for the purpose of sealing in wall paper glue. I’ve had varying degree of success, even with the wall paper sealant primers. Water based Shellac is said to be the best product to use, but be prepared to put on two coats of whatever sealant you use either way.

Hope this helps? Thanks for reading, & choosing BuildZoom for your contractor referral needs.

No, the glue and any residue should be removed prior to painting.

Not recommended. The glue should be removed first.

Hello this is Jeremy owner of Cal Star Painting. Typically the professional method of removing wallpaper is using a wall paper removal compound in a squirt bottle and using a tool called a tiger striper, it scores the wall paper an allows the compound to dissolve the glue and loosen it. To answer your question, " Can you paint over wall paper glue" ? Sorry guys the answer is yes you can, in fact there are glue agents in paint, given they are different but still it’s adhesive, it’s not going to affect the paint staying on the wall. You can prime the wall with oil based primers and paint right over it. Usually getting absolutely all the glue off is silly.

It is always better to remove the old paste with a bucket of hot water with a small amount of dish soap, use a sponge with a scotch pad and rinse well. Your second option would be to prime over the paste but the end result will not be ideal.
