We just had our floors professionally refinished and I’m noticing circular groove marks in some areas. Is this an error? I’ve never seen them on other floors. Should our GC fix it as part of our original contract?
Hi, it’s hard to answer. Sometimes, it depend on the floor type. Refinishing old floors can be a challenge. If you can send pictures, I can answer you better.
- If floor is in bad shape, I always tell clients it will not be perfect.
- If it’s very bad floor, I will not take the job, because i can’t make it 100%. So, I’ll recommend to buy new floor.
Circular grooves that cross multiple strips of wood usually happen with an edger or orbital sander. This is an error and it happens when the edger is dug in too deep or they used heavy sandpaper and never hit that spot with light sandpaper. It’s a bit of a challenge to get those circles out now without having to redo the whole floor. If your GC sands that one spot it will open up the pores in that one spot and will be difficult to match the stain with the rest of the floor. Talk to your GC if he’s good he can fix it.
