I live in LA and am wondering about roofing. I’ve always had asphalt shingles, but it looks like a lot of homes out here use those terracotta roof tiles. They don’t seem to be used widely in other parts of the US I’ve lived in, so is there some reason . should install those over asphalt in Los Angeles?
I think they use tile because of the heat in those states that have hot climate every month of the year, tile last longer and is better in hot areas. You see tile in places like mexico etc…
I spent some time living in a tropical environment, and tile was very common, whereas traditional asphalt shingles were almost non-existent.
Why is this? It sounds like it’s an energy efficiency thing, but why is it only beneficial in hot climates?
Tile roof is for aesthetic purposes usually, but comes to be more expensive. Asphalt shingles have longer duration. Tile roofs used to be more insulated, but with today’s asphalt shingles being in L.A. requires cool roof, the insulating properties doesn’t really make a difference.
