Do I need a licensed pro for a major bathroom remodel?

Hi,
It is always recommended to use a license contractors, bathroom remodel required few trades and needs to have a permit for this kind of work so a license contractor should be your best choice

Depending on what city you live in - you may be required to have a permit. For example Indiana (the city) requires a permit when remodeling your bathroom but the city of Northern Cambria does not. Always check with your local office if you are not sure

You want a licensed contractor so work s insured and warrantied.

I guess it will depend on what your city or municipality requires. In Florida, you will need to pull at least a plumbing permit (assuming you are building a new shower (shower pan), moving pipes, etc. You might also need a mechanical permit if you are installing an exhaust fan (which is now required in all bathrooms independently if you have a window or not) and you might also need an electrical permit (if you are adding lights or switches). You might not need a building permit though if you are not changing layouts or building new walls. A shower wall doesn’t require a permit (most of the times) but you might need one if you are getting into an exterior wall. In short, check with the building department that has jurisdiction over your project to ensure you comply with all local building codes.

Using a licenses pro for anything that is a major change in your home is always recommended. For a major bathroom remodel permits are required since you are manipulating the plumbing, water, and electrical features. Those changes need to be made and built in a safe way and up to city codes. All cities have different requirements, In Los Angeles, where we operate, you must have a permit to remodel a bathroom. The process to get a permit goes through the contractor and architect, and for that you should hire a professional pro. Hiring a pro can save you a lot of money and you can ensure that the work is being done safely and correctly.

As a licensed contractor I always recommend doing a kitchen or bath rm remodel by the book as there are many different trades involved on these types of remodel projects. There is no one to turn to if the project gets messed up and or if whomever is doing the work does not have liability insurance, in addition if you plan on selling your home in the future or down the road there is no record of the updated work. Hope these points help…

It’s always good to have a licensed contractor for big projects in your home. Contractors bring the knowledge of plumbing, electrical, environmental, etc. to the table. When you complete such big projects on your own, without the experience a contractor provides, it can lead to potential health hazards that can be life threatening.

Yes. I would only recommend using licensed contractors. I would even go a step further and make sure all trade subs have proper licensing. Also making sure that the contractor and his subs get all the proper permits. this protects you and the contractor if something. Bathrooms are tricky there are a lot of thing that can go wrong. The more eyes put on a job the better. you will want documatation that the proper permits where pulled and the inspections passed.
