Do we need a permit to repave our driveway and sidewalk in front of our house?

Yes

Usually, for a driveway, you do not need a permit (at least here in PA we don’t), but a lot of the time, if the sidewalk is up against the road, you may need one. How it works here is as long as you aren’t having to disrupt traffic, or cut into the roadway, you don’t need one. If you have to take out the curb of the asphalt road in order to do a concrete driveway or sidewalk, then you may need a permit. Hope this helped.

State and local roads can differ. The person doing the work needs to know if they need a permit. If the customer has any questions a simple trip to the codes office or local township or even calling them can resolve the issue.

Concrete is considered a permanent surface and asphalt is not. That may make a difference also.

Hello Katie, Good question
Here in Phx Az, Allot of clients are using Pavers rather than a standard concrete pour, The look is very attractive. You may also want to look at a stamped concrete option.

Our local codes only require that the Driveway surface be a Solid surface / Non soil, application for Driveways, That leaves Concrete/ Pavers and even asphalt as a option, Hard Tamped Gravel or stone are also options.

Sidewalks are generally the city’s responsibility to maintain., unless your in a county subdivision.
Again in Arizona

It’s always a good idea to check with your local cities ordnance as well as the HOA should one apply to your location.
Your local Licensed contractor would also know what the codes and regulation are for your area.
Hope this gives you some insight for your project.
