If a project is going to require you to make significant upfront investments, do you ever ask for proof of capital before bidding or executing a contract?

No. Not for residential remodeling. We do require a scheduling deposit and will not begin work or put the job on our schedule until that deposit has been made.
We do not, however we never work for free, in essence, only complete work up until the deposit and/or draw has been exhausted and replenished to keep work progressing.
