Do you have to hire an architect from the same state you're wanting to build in?

I’m wanting to have a new home built. I’m having trouble finding an architect in my area, and I wonder if an architect from a different state can draw up the plans for us. I’ve been looking online and found an architect I’m really interested in hiring, but they’re in a different state. Can I still hire them, or does it have to be someone from the same state? Thanks!

Please contact your building inspector, fine out what there requirements are, size of your home would indicate state licenced or not. Some out of state architects have several licenses to cover other states. Then you decide without taking chances. Or making a costly mistake.

An architect must be licensed to practice architecture in the state in which the project is located. Architects are licensed by individual states and may have licenses in as many states as they achieve licensure in.

Though it is preferable for a variety of reasons to hire a local architect (familiarity with local building codes and jurisdictions, also with local construction and design trends, and minimal transportation time to/from project site, etc.), it is not unusual to hire one out of state. If you like a particular style of architecture that is common in another state, using the services of one from that state may give you the house and living experience you want.

I agree with Boston Contractors & Developers about checking with your local building department about their requirements based on their local codes.

Best successes with your new home! I hope this information was helpful to you.
