In Arizona, if the total cost of the work exceeds $1000, then a license is required to do the work. However, if the total is under $1,000, you may still want to use a licensed contractor for the following reasons:

  1. Licensed contractors have to pass exams to demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter.
  2. There is recourse against a licensed contractor if they fail to complete a project through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, you’re on your own with an unlicensed contractor.
  3. A licensed contractor is required to carry liability insurance, work comp insurance and be bonded. These items are important to you because if the contractor doesn’t carry insurance, your homeowner’s insurance is on the hook if the painter or one of their employees is injured on your site.
