Does having a general contractor license make you better than someone that doesn't have a license?

Having a license shows that you a working toward being a professional or are ONE. I have had a license to do business for over 44 years and each estimate comes with my license and insurance certificate. When I was younger it helped me get bigger projects and now still helps my customers more comfortable moving ahead and starting a project. Looking like a pro and having a license does make you better money. Sell quality, charge fair prices for the work you are contracting and always ask for referrals.

Having a license does not necessarily make you better, but it means you are certified as legitimate. You put in the time and effort to present yourself in the best way possible. As Advance Restorations said, potential customers are much more comfortable knowing they hired a licensed contractor and without a license its nearly impossible to get big jobs. People take you more seriously if you have a license and good insurance.

Nothing makes you better than someone else, only the type of work and quality of work that you do will set what people feel and think about you.

No it just means you are legal.

A licensed contractor is in fact better than a non-licensed individual.

A licensed contractor has way more to loose in regards to reputation than an unlicensed individual. What this means is that everything from quality, post services and building relationships with clients is set to a higher standard with a licensed contractor. The standard is higher in order to maintain great reviews etc. and to avoid having complaints submitted to the state license board. An unlicensed individual cannot have complaints reported to the state license board if he/she performs poor quality workmanship and lacks customer service as a whole. Unlicensed contractors do not need to set a higher standard simply because they have way less to loose in terms of reputation.

So a licensed contractor is better than an unlicensed contractor because they must hold a higher standard… but this is also good for the consumer who could simply do a license search and check for complaints etc. The client is much better off in regards to legality, quality workmanship and post services when going with a licensed contractor.

A license doesn’t necessarily mean “great contractor.” That being said, working with a licensed is better and safer than an unlicensed contractor because they must hold a higher standard. Homeowners can also feel more at ease because this way they could easily do a license search and check for complaints etc. The client is much better off in regards to workmanship, standard labor warranties and any other legalities when choosing a licensed contractor.
