We are developing a tool to provide folks with a ballpark estimate for a bathroom remodel.
So far, based on our research, we've been able to come up with the major factors that can influence the final price:
Fixtures: Toilet(s), Sink, Bathtub, Shower
Cabinets
Flooring
Walls
HVAC modifications
Painting
The variables we are considering include labor versus materials; standard markups; regional fluctuations; quality of materials; electrical.
Are there any other major items that you see in typical bathroom remodels that we aren't considering?
Bathroom remodel costs vary quite a bit based on size, the experience and qulity of the labor and the materials. An average bath 5’ x 8’ or 10’ usually runs $15,000 to $18, 000 for mid level. You should expect an American made mid level vanity, quartz or granite counter, tile floor, new cast iron or acylic tub, mid level American made plumbing fixtures (faucet, sink, toilet, shower valve, towel bars, etc), a floated or Wedi back tile surround, a 3/8" frameless shower door, sconce lights and a mirror. Some brand names that would fit into this level would be Kraftmaid cabinetry, Dynasty cabinetry, Dal Tile, Arizona Tile, Kohler or moen plumbing fixtures.
It sounds like you have considered all the major items going into the project. Now you really need to consider your contractor.get at least three bids from licenced contractors and if your just looking for the lowest price, big mistake. Look for good references and chemistry , you have to feel comfortable with your contractor.
The usual cost vary depending on the material level you chose from. For instance, purchasing products from the box stores is usually cheaper but also comes at a quality cost. The parts on the plumbing fixtures is usually plastic as compaired to a plumbing supply house where all the parts are metal.
One of the major remodel requirments is updating the shower / tub surround tile. The usual cost per sq ft is 26.00 which includes materials required to build the surround excluding the tile, glass enclosure and fixtures
A key driver of cost in a bathroom remodel is whether or not you’re moving plumbing fixtures. The cost of moving the drain for a water closet, tub, or vanity will usually exceed the cost of the finish. Changes in drain locations sometimes require work in the ceiling of the room below.
The age of the existing bathroom also affects remodels. Older bathrooms were often done before electrical, plumbing, and mechanical (heating and ventilation) codes changed, and a remodel will often trigger full compliance with new codes. New bathrooms frequently require new circuits to be pulled from the home’s main panel or from a subpanel.

Hello! You have the right start with figuring out what to budget in your new bathroom. When we provide a bathroom estimate for a homeowner (giving that they need an entire remodel) this is the items we price out:
-Demo -Durock (used for floor and walls of shower/tub) -Tile for floor and walls (extra for a mosaic design) (cost for thinset and grout) -cabinet (single or double vanity, finished ends, toe kick, wood or laminate, doors and/or drawers. All items to ask if buying at a big box store) -counter top (and cost for fabrication of stone with sink/s) -mirror or medicine cabinet -toilet -vanity light -exhaust fan -recessed lighting in ceiling of tub/shower -drywall/tape/plaster (if need be) -paint -baseboard & shoe -plumbing work up to code (extra to change plumbing locations) -electrical up to code -HVAC work - tub or shower base (recommend to have a custom shower base -plastic bases eventually leak and crack) (if tub, there’s the cost for drain and trim too) -shower/tub faucet and valve (valves are made with less "muscle" at big box stores. If able to spend the little extra, try to buy it from your contractor if they are a distributor - better quality) - sink faucets -labor cost for all items. Last but not least, permits if choose to do so. We always recommend 3 estimates and always ask to see if they have their licenses for plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Being license, bonded and insured is also a must too.
Hope this helped!
Like other Pros in this category we want to give you an example… we have such samples with prices on our website of past projects however for a mid range bathroom its likely to be in a range of $7,000 to $12,000
prices that we supply in the estimate are given as a material budget and a labor estiamte or not to exceed number.
the materials can be higher or lower depending on your tastes… and if you want to shop around we work with the clients on recomendations. “someone” has to do the shopping, if you want to save $$ then you can shop…
Thats great! let me know how the tool works and where we can use it. The costs for us for a simple bathroom remodeling project costs roughly 6-11k. Costs can vary dramatically between the type of tiles you choose, vanity, shower and fixtures installed. In addition to the obvious, considering plumbing repairs and demolishen of the existing bathroom. Its amazing how many people have leaks that are undealt with and costs are suprisingly high due to repairs and mold.
