Contractors, have you ever done a home office remodel? What is some advice that you’d share with homeowners? We’d love to see pics! Post them here or link to your page and we might feature them in an upcoming story.
In remodeling a home office, focus as much on comfort and attactiveness as on functionality. If you aren’t comfortable and happy in the space, you’ll just take your laptop back to the kitchen table. 1) Install well-designed, built-in (or solidly constructed) work furniture. If you have the space, set up your main desk area to face out into the room. 2) Make sure you have outstanding light, including the ability to light your space very brightly when you need a psychological pick-up. 3) Focus on physical comfort, including warmth when it’s cold outside, and freedom from drafts. A comfortable floor surface is surprisingly important. 4) Design surfaces and storage so that when you look up from your work you wlll see works of art and pictures of your family, friends, and pets. When I’m tired I can look up and remind myself why I’m working.
When remodeling a home office make sure there are enough receptacles and communication ports in accessible locations before setting up the office furniture. Also, having general lighting that is comfortable for the amount of office space you’ll be working in.
