How accurate are online remodeling cost estimators?

Nothing compares to having an experienced professional doing an at-home estimate. The price really fluctuates on the size of the space and materials you want to use. If you set a budget, a good contractor should be able to make it work and give you the best quality work. Many companies, like ours, offer FREE at-home estimates with absolutely no obligation.

No two projects are exactly the same, therefor getting an accurate estimate online without a professional seeing, measuring, and inspecting the space/project in person it is nearly impossible. There certainly are some general rules of thumb that can be used to give you a ballpark price range… but even then, there are so many variables. Certain projects are more straight forward than others, like window and door replacements, or roof replacements (given there is no actual damage that needs to be addressed), and these types of projects might be priced fairly accurately online. But your more custom projects, like kitchen and bathroom remodels, require a professional in the home to get measurements and learn what types of things and materials you have in mind in order to give you an accurate estimate. Many remodeling companies offer FREE in-home estimates, so there is no reason you should have to rely on an online estimator!

If you know all of the hidden items to account for then you can tally up all of the items on a site like homewyse and use your own spreadsheet or even old-fashioned notebook. An example would be doing the take off on shower tile install, if you miss the shower pan under the floor you can be in for an $800-$1200 surprise.

Construction Cost Consultants can be vital in the preparation for your next big project. There are endless details that can be missed where they are can help as the third set of eyes looking out for your investment.

Depends on what system you are using. Which one are you talking about?

They might give you a ballpark figure, but I would definitely recommend having 2 or 3 contractors come take a look. In general, I find the calculators to underestimate in expensive regions like the Bay Area and NY.

Depends on the contactor.people don’t realize it’s what u do when people watch it’s about what u do when nobody’s arpund

A general rule of thumb for us is to come out and inspect the job before providing even a ball park quote. There are too many variables to consider and we like to do our own investigations and measurements. However, some online cost estimators, if they combine many factors and details, may provide you with a very rough idea.
