I just started a company last year and I want to expand out of my area but I want it to be a smooth transition.
As a general contractor, I’ve found the most quality subcontractors come from word-of-mouth recommendations. I’ve found that most other general contractors are happy to share information on one or two subs that they’ve worked with. For instance, I would share my favorite electrician or plumber because I want them to succeed as well. Just remember not to undercut the person thats helping you out. On the other side of that coin I would be put off by someone asking me for a full list of all of my subcontractors - hope this helps.
I agree with Kauffman, I have found that the easiest way to build a list of subs is to ask for referrals from contractors you are already working with, or from your trusted material suppliers. I think that by contacting your prospective area material sales reps and Real Estate agents you will be able to tap into a trove of information on who is good and why , who to look out for, and who the up and coming talents are. Just remember to pay it forward when its your turn to answer the call! Good luck to you
