How can I patch holes in siding?

I’m removing some old security grates off our windows that aren’t really needed. However, the bolts left big holes in our vinyl siding. What’s the best way to repair the holes?

Julie,

The best way is to cut back the vinyl and replace the area with the holes with a new piece of siding. This requires a professional. The area can also be caulked very carefully with a clear silicone caulking, or a color match caulking.

Hi there,
You cannot patch holes in siding. You need to replace the siding.

Thanks

You’ll need a tube of color-matched vinyl siding caulk, which you can purchase from siding retailers. Caulk is matched the same way as paint. If the retailer doesn’t have information for your siding on file, take in a small piece of siding to ensure a good match. If the hole is larger than a nail or screw puncture, you’ll also need a scrap of matching siding to use as a patch.

This usually come in a caulking type tube and the sealant can be applied directly into the hole. Make sure it is air tight and completely filled to prevent water entering your siding.
