Our bathroom door won’t open over the bathroom mat, which annoys me endlessly since I’m constantly having to move the mat. I thought about sanding the door down, but it’s hollow core.
How much can I safely sand off the bottom? What are my other options?
Opening any door to a soft surface like carpet is a never ending chore. Instead, any door, whether hollow core or solid core can be cut off at the bottom and a piece cut to length and installed that has a sweep or replaceable rubber type insulation piece in the new base of the door where it makes contact. Also, when tile adjoins tile, a separate threshold piece can be installed that has a slight bevel on it that extends inside the door opening. Both are available through Lowes, Home Depot or a Tile distributor. If you have carpet laying on top of the tile surface, move it back 6" to eliminate the drag.
One option is to create a new door style at the bottom. Cut wood to fit into hollow door and glue and brat nails.
At least a half inch. Cut the door to desired length, then sand.
