How can I tell how much weight a wall can bear for hanging objects?

I want to hang a living wall planter I made out of a pallet on my wall, but it’s really heavy, like 75 lbs. Is there a max weight that I can add to the wall studs?

Best thing to do is call your local engineer. He can give you the load calculations to determine that.

It really depends on your existing conditions and how you will connect the planter to the wall. In general, walls can carry a great amount of load so the connection to the wall is probably more critical. But just to give you an idea, and assuming that your wall is a conventional 2x4 wood stud framing, one single stud can take about 500 lb of compression load. And one nail into the wood stud can take about 100 lbs of shear force. If anchored properly, walls can easily carry objects like TV’s that may weigh up to 200 lbs. Hope this provides a little more insight but definitely seek out a professional contractor or engineer that can guide you since you do not want your planters falling off of the walls and hurting someone.
