We’re in the prep phase right now for our bathroom remodel, meaning everything but the tile, vanity, and fixtures have been done in our bathroom. I’ve read many horror stories on forums about bad prep causing otherwise beautiful looking renovation jobs to deteriorate quickly. How can I confirm if the prep my GC has done is sufficient before putting up the tile?
Double check their work. Youtube videos are helpful.
Hi Carrie, most of the contractors will know what to do, i do hope you hire someone with CA Lic#, Most important is to get it inspected by the city permit services in your city, so you had to apply to permit and pay fee, then you know it’s good prep work if it’s pass or if there is corrections. We only do work with permits and sometime inspectors will tell to do extra things to protect your home so it’s highly important to inspect by third party most of the time city inspectors.
Hi Carrie
You should be looking at walls & floor covered in Backerboard (cement board) right now.
The screws holding the board in place should be every 6-8 inches apart throughout the board.
How the boards look now are a good indication of how the tile is going to come out; they should not be wavy or incorrectly aligned as this will transfer on to the finish tile job.
Run your hand over the seam where two boards meet to make sure they are all flush/plumb.
The better the boards look the better the tile job will come out
Grab a 6’ level and check to see that the floor is parallel and the walls are plumb.
A good tile subcontractor is able to “float” variations in substrate as necessary. With the cabinets they may be shimmed or furred out as needed.
Also be gracious with contractor if working with your original concrete or framing. A renovation is more precarious than new construction so please keep that in mind.
