How do I estimate the optimal height to hang a chandelier?

If it is going above a dining room table, then it should be about three feet above the table. If it is going in a standard eight foot ceiling in a foyer or hallway then it should be at least six and a half feet high. I have hung some as high as seven feet.

Over a table we hang them 6’ 6" from finished floor.

Depending on the chandelier fixture itself, you can hang the light between 32 -38" above a table - and I always discuss the placement with the homeowner. In a hallway or foyer, the height can be 6’6" to 9’ off the floor. Ceiling height, type of chandelier and home style all determine the most pleasing height for a large light fixture.
