How do you get a handyman's license?

I live in a small rural town and have gotten use to doing a lot of house work myself. How can I get licensed for this?

First you have to check with your local city or state to see the applicable step to take on achieving the right licenses for the right trade you will pursue

Chris, hi.

Depending on where you’re living, I’d call the state offices and ask which one works with licensing handymen and go from there. They will tell you what the requirements are; experience, personal net worth, licensing issues, insurance limits, etc.

Good luck!

In Illinois there are no handyman License required, but you should check with your local village city hall. There are plenty of certificate programs to help you certify.

As far as I know, State of Michigan does not require an individual to have a handyman’s license. Having said that, as an unlicensed contractor you can only take on project that does not exceed $600.00 in value. If you would like to become a licensed contractor (Residential Builder), you would need to take a 60 hour course either online or in the classroom, then take a state exam and pay appropriate fees. You would also need to register your business and acquire an EIN number from the IRS. You can also become a licensed maintenance contractor, which is probably more similar to a handyman license. The steps would be the same, except that the requirements are less stringent and the fees are lower.

In most states you are only required to get a business license in order to operate as a Handyman. Check with your local authorities.
