there are a variety of apps that can help you with you trade , for example there are nec code apps for electrical work . you can also use your phone to check emails to stay in touch with your customers , print from your phone , etc…
We have found that even using the notepad feature on a smart phone is a great way to store project notes, estimate information, contact info, etc. Being able to access the internet to check lead websites, manufacturer websites for specs, state and national code sites, etc has been a huge help in instant information needed to answer on-the-job questions.Email is one of the biggest pluses with smart phones. For certain aspects of our work we will use Square to process credit cards through the phone
We use mobile devices heavily in our day to day operations. I use my smartphone for all my my invoicing and also for any CC payments we accept. A smartphone is also very helpful for optimizing our business for search by using check in apps like nearbynow and foursquare. It also helps that all pictures taken on smartphones have the location data embedded into the photo. This is great when using on Google+ and Panaramio.
A good mobile-ready web site is a great sales tool. Our web site works well on mobile devices as well as larger computers, and I can show a prospective client our gallery of projects as well as choices of finishes, similar projects, and so on. Of course I also use the personal productivity apps - calendar, e-mail, phone, etc.

Using cell phones and smart phones has completely revolutionized how we run our business. Since we have a team of about 20 employees, constant communication is a must, whether out in the field, on the road, or in the office. We are all equipped with headsets that allow us to talk on the phone while working or driving, and several of us have hands-free capabilities on our phone which allows us to check and write text messages and e-mails without having to lift a finger. This has increased not only our efficiency but also safety, especially when on the road.
For those of us that have smartphones it allows us to keep track of e-mails in real time so that we can respond to customers, co-workers, subs, etc. within an appropriate amount of time. We use the Dropbox app to store necessary files so that our foremen and lead carpenters can check documents pertaining to the job while on the jobsite. Likewise, pictures we take of our work, on the job, or of potential jobs are automatically uploaded to Dropbox so other members of our team can view them, no matter where they are. It is an extremely convenient and useful tool.
Smart phones have changed almost every single aspect of our business. We use the spreadsheet application numbers to quickly and accurately estimate roofing projects. Who needs an old GPS unit when you have multiple map applications right on your phone that are constantly updated with new info. It’s easier than ever to stay up to date with our team through email, dropbox and pictues when they have questions.
