How long does it take to build a new home?

From the point at which I get started, how long should I expect it to take to have a custom home built? I know there is a lot of variability but is there a length of time that a custom home typically takes? What are the things that can prolong the schedule?

As a general idea, you could expect a time frame of around 8 months - 2 years.

Depends a lot on your design, expertise of your home builder, your local government.

This is of course from the point in which you have a design & a contract signed to get it built.

Getting to that point could take 2 months - 1 years time.

How long long does it take to build a custom home?

A few things to take into mind when determining what the time fram will be on your new custom home.

  1. Do you own the lot or does your builder?

  2. Will the builder or buyer be carrying the construction loan or is it a cash purchase?

  3. Do plans need to be sumitted for approval?

  4. How large is the home? Does it have a basement?

  5. Will clearing need to be done to lot?

  6. What time of the year is it when you are starting the home.

typically during the summer or fall months a home from 1500-2500 should be able to be completed in less than 120 days.

from digging out foundation to certificate of occupancy average 8 months

I am currenlty building homes at Cervino in Midway, Utah. From the start of excavation, it takes me about 6 months to build a new, custom, luxury, single-family home. However, it does depend upon the builder you have chosen.

anywhere from 6 months to two years. sometimes unseen circumtances happen, changes in design, weather, permits, the the big one the bank or the clients finances.

In our area once you have your permit in hand a true custom home of 3,000-5,000sqft will take about 9 months to a year. We have had very highly detailed projects take up to 2 1/2 years. Two big factors are how many changes along the way and the level of detail a home has.

Has the construction process started? If the process has been started, then it would take around one year. But if it is just proposed to be started and you have not gone through the process of taking permit from authority and choosing a design and contractor, if may take more than that.

Typicaly for a mid size home would take 9 to 12 months depends on architectural details and specialty items. When planing the project from purchase lot, to design to building documents and permiting, board of appeals, special conditions will effect the time to obtain building permits, cold / snow effect the schedule as well. Plan the project from start to finish, friendly advice to give the foundation 30 days before back fill and framing start, this is a custome home and not build to sell.

Custom home building varies in time frames on complexity and selections. A faster paced home can happen in as little as 4 months, and slower ones take up to a few years. In Western NY, a precast basement system, and panelized framing design can speed up the building process by months. With these types of options, the shell of the home is possible to complete in as little as 1.5 months if all goes smoothly and weather is not a big factor. You may pay a little more for a speed package, but ask yourself if getting into your new home sooner save you money before deciding.

A average 2,500 sq ft is can be built in 6-8 month build. I would say our average workforce throught the duration of a project is 12 workers a day. That is how I estimated my 6-8 months. I found in many cases the owner delay the project by taking to long to decide on materials to be used. The best thing to do is have everything picked out before the construction starts.
