Building permits typically take a week in a best case scenario. If there are violations it can definitely delay the process. Make sure you have all necessary documents on hand when you go to the village. This can include your license, bond, contract and plat of survey. I would call ahead or look online for required documentation to avoid needing to make additional trips should you be missing anything.
This can vary greatly but on average we have found in California best case scenario it would take 4 to 6 weeks for an extensive home remodel or new home construction. Smaller things such as installing a water heater, adding small appliance circuit this would be considered an over-the-counter permit. Over-the-counter permit are given the same day as long as paperwork has been filled out correctly and any minor drawings or engineering has been completed.
Most municipalities review permit applications in the order they are turned in. In Flagstaff expect 4-6 week wait.
In Houston, TX expect a minimum of 6 weeks. It is rare for plans to be approved within the City of Houston, the first time through so be prepared for 10-12 weeks. The Villages are very responsive but they require a fire sprinkler plan, so allow 3-4 weeks for drafting that plan and approval. Then 4-6 weeks to answer all their questions and get your permit.
In addition to the comments below, the General Contractor that you use can have a bearing on the lead time for a permit. If the construction or remodeling company applying for the permit, is well known in that particular city then the turn around time can be significantly reduced.
Not only does it change from state to state and county to county, it also changes from city to city. Some places I can get a permit the same day. In others it might take 3 weeks. If it has to go under a plan review expect the longer end of the spectrum. Make sure you turn in everything that is needed by the building department to ensure the shortest period of time.
This question requires an understanding of the jurisdiction you are in. The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) is different in each community. The AHJ will have the specifics to the region and area to which they enforce recognized, Adopted, building codes. The AHJ will deliver the permit as soon as the requirements are met to issue. Things to consider are building plans, site review, cost of the project, sub contractors and time frame to completion.
Permit delivery can be as quick as after payment, or up to two weeks depending on the locale.
San Diego seems to take 3-6 weeks for permit.
It really depends on how extensive is the work you are requesting a permit for.
In Los Angeles it averages out to any where from 1 week to 5/6 weeks depending if you have all required documents on hand correct & ready. For ‘Over the counter permits’ if you have all requirements ready, you can have it that same day.

In Chicago, it can take anywhere from 30-60 days for a new home build to be approved. If it is a remodel requiring plans, then you are strapped to a similar timeline. But, if you purchased a property and it has violations on it, then you are in a different swimming lane from the above two examples. For violations, it depends on how fast you can resolve those violations and how quickly the inspector can be scheduled. Good luck!
