How many contractors should I talk to/get bids from when doing a kitchen or bathroom remodel?

I want to make sure I’m getting competitive bids and meeting a good variety of professionals, but also don’t want to waste both my time and theirs.

Generally at BuildZoom we recommend speaking with at least 3-5 vetted contractors. Hearing from at least three helps you get an idea of what details you should be thinking about, some insight into the variability of the project cost, and an idea for timeline/complexity.

That said, you won’t get a bid from every contractor you speak to, as sometimes it’s just not a good fit. We have contractors opt-in to projects before they reach out, but even then sometimes the details don’t quite match up. In that case, you might want to talk to a couple more who can help inform your decision.

It is a standard practice before you decide on your bathroom or kitchen remodel to obtain at least 3 quotes from those whose practice includes that type of work.
