There are 100 square feet in a roofing square. You can determine how many number of square shingles you will need to do your roof by multiplying the length times the width of the area you are looking to have done. That will give you a total square footage of the area. Then you devide that area by 100 giving you the number of roofing squares needed to do your project.
Example 1. If I have a roof area that is 10’ wide by 10’ tall that is a total area of 100 square feet. I devide the total area by 100. That gives me a total of 1 roofing square to complete the project.
Note: There are tipically 3 bundles of shingles to 1 roofing square. Make sure you allow up to about 10% for waste for your cutoffs on your gables, valleys, and hips when factoring in your total number of shingles to order.
