How much does a typical full bathroom renovation cost? Are the labor costs determined by the finishes?

What type of budget range should I plan for?

SS Contracting
If we were to do the job yes it would depend upon the finishes. Labor costs are determined by the amount of work that goes into the job. For example a ceramic floor, would cost a lot more to install than a sheet of linoleum rollout for the floor. A one piece shower, would be less expensive than tiling one. The budget range can be quite expansive. A better question to ask yourself is what are you willing to put into the project. We’ve done remodels as low as $700, and as high as $30,000.

In an average, older single story ranch home with a 5’x7’ space with the scope of work to include going as far as replacing the insulation in the exterior wall but not the ceiling, with mid priced cabinets, fixtures and having the x-fan motor replaced (in-kind). The venting should be check out for proper working condition along with the electrical switches and GFIC’s etc. Plan for a budget in the $6K+ range as being reasonable for a quality conscious contractor in Alaska, prices in the lower 48 are generally a bit less.

Yes, Labor cost are determined by the finishes. A couple of examples are ceramic floors requiring more labor to install than sheet vinyl or a tiled shower stall will require more labor to install over a fiberglass insert.

PS. The better quality contractor will place tarps along their path from the front door each morning to better protect your floor coverings during their work day.

Good luck with your project!

Estimating Bathroom Remodel Costs

Determining your budget could be tricky when planning your renovation. A large factor in determining cost will be the size of your bathroom, ranging from small to medium or master bathroom size. The fixtures you will need to fit in your bathroom will range in price depending on their size. The list of fixtures involved in remodeling a bathroom can include elements like faucets and fixtures, floor plan changes, new showers or baths, new flooring, countertops, cabinets and lighting. This long list of comes with a lot of different prices and options to compare before choosing what to buy for your bath remodel.

Here is a chart with some of the many options involved in a bathroom remodel, including the least expensive (small) to most expensive (master) costs for each:
Option Low Range Mid Range High Range
Install bathtub $400 - $1,500 $2,600 - $4,100 $6,000 - $8,000
Install cabinets $1,200 - $3,500 $4,700 - $7,000 $8,000 - $13,000
Install countertops $900 - $2,000 $2,800 - $4,100 $5,000 - $6,500
Install flooring $800 - $2,000 $2,500 - $3,600 $5,000 - $7,000

Install toilet $130 - $250 $340 - $480 $550 - $780

Remember: you don’t have to include all of these items in your bathroom remodel, unless you’re building a whole new bathroom from scratch. You always have the option to add some pieces–sink, toilet and lighting fixtures–after you’ve done the bigger projects to spread out costs. Also consider that some of these projects–bathtub installation, shower installation or cabinet installation–have smaller, cheaper alternatives. For example, you can refinish cabinets to make them look brand new and flow with the new bathroom for less money. There is also the option of replacing faucets and other plumbing fixtures, which costs less than replacing bathtubs and showers.

A typical bathroom remodel will run on average $4000-$6000 depending on materials chosen. The cost can run upward of $20,000 or better for larger custom bathrooms.

Its always smart to research the products and fixtures ahead of time and make sure that your contractor knows exactly what you want.
