How much does it cost for a gallon of paint?

Paint has a HUGE price variance. They each have their ups and downs but it really comes down to what you want. If a customer tells us they prefer not using the big box store, I know that if we buy paint from them, that will be exactly what the customer sees every day, regardless of the quality of the workmanship.

If you have a friend working at the big box store who will bug you if you don’t buy there, buy there.

It greatly depends on the type of paint and even the color. On average though you would be around $30-34/gallon. However, when comparing paints there is more to consider than just the price. If you had an idea of the color and type of paint, then you could start to look into options for cost compared to the product purchased.

I have never had great success with big box store paint. Behr Marquee is good at the big box stores. I prefer the Sherwin or Benjamin Moore because of their customer service.

Most box store prices are for lesser quality paints. You can expect to pay about $15 to $30 for a gallon of paint at depot. Williams and Moore will be about $4 more for comparable, but higher quality paints. I have painted many homes, and the higher quality matters for sprayers, how it lays down over itself, (called a wet edge), and how it covers.

I like Bear Premium, and also Moore and Williams.

Good Quality Residential and Commercial Grade Interior or Exterior Paint will run $25 -$35 a gallon for your own mixed and matched color. You can save buying pre-colored base paints from your retail home stores in 5 gallon buckets and drive your costs down to $15 -$25 a gallon on average.
