I’m looking into buying a new home on a beautiful acreage. I really love this house, but the ceilings are only 8 feet. I am used to 10’ ceilings and before buying the home, I’d like to have an idea of the cost of raising the ceiling in the great room and living rooms. These rooms over beautiful grounds. The roof is pitched and slightly angled.
Hard to indicate without seing the house pictures and the structural framing plans. Rais ceiling, reframing walls, ceiling & roof, electrical, plumbing & HVAC with some venting, also if a brick fire place to raise the chimny up 2 feet as well. Alot of unkowns.
You must ask local experienced builder who take a look on this in place.place. Nobody can answer at this question without see this house.
It depends on the structure - for sure do not simply remove rafters! I saw a house on the mainline where someone did that. Had to put a lot of structure back. The ductwork layout and framing type have some say in this as well.
Often when a house is gaining an addition, we incorporate a volume ceiling. If the existing house has a 7 1/2 ft. or 8 ft. ceiling, we can go down two or three steps to get a 9’ or so ceiling on the ground level, and put a cathedral or tray ceiling on the second floor and boy does that create some “WOW!”
Just as an info piece, project estimates can vary widely based on many details, from location of the home to qualification and liability coverage of the contractor. Any actual numbers thrown out should be taken as a very rough ballpark number.
That said, it would be great to understand more about what’s involved in raising a roof like this. What are the steps/requirements? What are the biggest costs involved, generally speaking, and where are the hidden costs?
