How much does it cost to replace windows?

I’m building a budget for our remodel, and I’m trying to figure out how much I should plan to spend on windows. I went to a window store, but they wouldn’t give me a straight answer on price, saying it depended on my contractor.

Ultimately, we need to do the following:

Replace 8 standard sized exterior windows (I think they’re 24" x 36") and 4 larger exterior picture windows (48" x 36") - these windows face the street on the southern side of the house and should be good enough quality to retain heat and block sound.

Replace 4 interior windows (well…they face an air shaft) and 4 windows that face the backyard (which is sheltered on all sides and has less issues with wind, light, and traffic noise).

All of windows are currently single pane aluminum, though if we can afford it we’d like to upgrade to vinyl. The exterior windows are top priority, and we’ll do the interior windows if we can afford it.

How much should I expect to pay (materials + labor) to replace the windows, assuming there are no issues with dry rot, etc.?

A standard window can run anywhere from $500-800. Depends on which brand you are looking to use. It also depends if you are going retro fit or new construction.
